This is a good story about how people in Sioux City appreciate the nice contribution of professional nurses in the community, so that even students also learn to reciprocate the nurses’ good deeds, by simply making Valentine cards for them as well as other people inside the nursing homes.

Just as the day of hearts is approaching, students of Blessed Sacrament Religious Education Program (BSRE) have already crafted and made Valentine cards they would give to the nurses in nursing homes located in their county. Other private schools in the county also have this kind of project during Valentine’s Day.

Pat Walsh, director for the Catholic Church said they’ve been into this card making project for the last ten years. It started as part of the Peace and Justice Committee outreach program until they brought it to the religious students. Walsh is happy this activity has become a tradition to give appreciation to the nurses and other organizations that are giving their best for the health care needs of many people in the community.

Michele Markham, an education instructor also said the nursing home residents admire this activity and treasure the Valentine’s Day celebration because they always receive love cards from students who also appreciate their contribution to society. She said the nurses will receive more during the Valentine’s Day celebration on February 14, 2009.

Brittney Greiner, a 9-year-old kid is also happy that she was one of those lucky students who will give love cards to the residents in the nursing homes. She said it’s really a great honor to part of the religious students involve in this 10-year old project. She said she hopes to contribute at least three cards. This is even a good career orientation for the students as many of them may have discovered their art skills and creativity.

Her younger sister, Jamie, is also part of the project. She also prepared a large red heart design for her card and hopes to finish coloring it with crayons and other designs to make it look appealing to the receiver. What is amazing form her design is that when someone opens the card the heart is also open.

There are about 30 people in the nursing homes and the items handcrafted by the kids would be given to these people. The cards are not individually addressed but the recipients would know they will come from the students of the Blessed Sacrament Religious Education.

The St. Thomas Nursing School which has been serving the communities from 1972 to 1986 is now blessed to have received new finds from a local couple Carol and Odis Peavy start the phase I of the project, reports UST President Robert Ivany. He said the couple’s generosity has also allowed more support groups to conduct fund raisings and raise more funds for the full project completion.

Ivany challenged foundations, hospitals and the generous people from Houston to take part in the efforts of restoring fully the nursing school which would eventually ease the reported shortage of more professional and registered nurses. Present reports said Texas can only afford to meet at least 59 percent of the demand for nursing professionals and students that can also give assistance.

It was earlier reported that there will be an increase in the shortage of more nurses not only in Houston but also in the whole region of the United States, which means it would also result to the lack of health care services to the people. The growing aging population in the US is also a concern that more and more public officials are worried about if the nursing shortage would continue as a mere problem of the country.

Ivany said the move to make the UST nursing school reopen would help the ongoing problem of the country because it can create new breed of dedicated and work-oriented nursing graduates and professionals. This means as soon as it starts opening doors more students would soon go back to UST and enroll in nursing.

The University of St. Thomas was known to be guided by the principles of Basilian fathers and they are also looking forward the nursing school would be successful when it open doors again to the communities. This also resulted with many countries opening nursing schools because of the demand in the US. However, with the new campaigns in most nursing schools in the US territory, it is also expected that more nursing graduates would be employed in the next few years that are really from students living in America. This means the demand in Asia for nursing graduates, as well as in other countries of the world is also expected to slow down with the entry of these future nursing graduates.
