Its been noted that the Maryland Hospital Association will be providing about $15.5 million for the next five years in the different 17 nursing educational learning institutes across the state in order to support increasing the number of learners on its educational program and be able to stave off towards a predicted shortage of nursing education. The entire plan will be financing through its donation from its healthcare providers, individuals who are quite concern about the average age towards nurses, and insurers is already rising while on the other side the baby boomers are also expected to increase its demand towards a medical care. The nursing career education programs that will be receiving towards this grants includes the Montgomery College, Anne Arundel Community College, Prince George’s Community College, the College of Southern Maryland, John Hopkins University School of Nursing and Howard Community College.
As of now, its been estimated that about 33% of the state population are now becoming older that are running to 50 through the next year to come and its expected to grow even more for about 40% by the coming 2020 according to the Maryland Department of Planning. According to the vice president of Maryland Hospitals Association that as of now people are living longer, become healthier, even more active and wanted to stay the way they are. As of now, Maryland will be requiring or needing about 10,000 nurses in order to meet this huge demand. Moreover, its been considered that the average age of this nurses in Maryland is only about 47 and 43% of the nurses who are planning to retire in the next few years according to Nancy Fiedler who is the spokeswoman of Maryland Hospitals Association.
Though, the concern is not just lack of learners who are pursuing a nursing career since most of the nursing educational learning institutes in the US are quite crowded already and now turning down for just more than 1,000 who are qualified applicants each year. These educational grants will entirely support the nursing schools take further learners and even more hire additional faculty. The hospital association stated that it’s already a commitment in order to reach $15.5 million towards a fundraising target that is already $60 million for over five years due to the fact that nursing education is quite expensive. Aside from having 360 faculty members that are quite needed in Maryland for its nursing programs and the different educational learning institutes have to purchase several medical technology and even build laboratories. Since, nursing programs considered as labor intensive and quite costly according to Barbara Nubile who is the director of nursing and to its associate dean of Montgomery College. The Montgomery College are planning to use this $235,000 that been receive from this hospital association initiative in order to build about three laboratories that’s entirely been located in Takoma Park campus where this nursing education program entirely located.
