This is a good story about how people in Sioux City appreciate the nice contribution of professional nurses in the community, so that even students also learn to reciprocate the nurses’ good deeds, by simply making Valentine cards for them as well as other people inside the nursing homes.
Just as the day of hearts is approaching, students of Blessed Sacrament Religious Education Program (BSRE) have already crafted and made Valentine cards they would give to the nurses in nursing homes located in their county. Other private schools in the county also have this kind of project during Valentine’s Day.
Pat Walsh, director for the Catholic Church said they’ve been into this card making project for the last ten years. It started as part of the Peace and Justice Committee outreach program until they brought it to the religious students. Walsh is happy this activity has become a tradition to give appreciation to the nurses and other organizations that are giving their best for the health care needs of many people in the community.
Michele Markham, an education instructor also said the nursing home residents admire this activity and treasure the Valentine’s Day celebration because they always receive love cards from students who also appreciate their contribution to society. She said the nurses will receive more during the Valentine’s Day celebration on February 14, 2009.
Brittney Greiner, a 9-year-old kid is also happy that she was one of those lucky students who will give love cards to the residents in the nursing homes. She said it’s really a great honor to part of the religious students involve in this 10-year old project. She said she hopes to contribute at least three cards. This is even a good career orientation for the students as many of them may have discovered their art skills and creativity.
Her younger sister, Jamie, is also part of the project. She also prepared a large red heart design for her card and hopes to finish coloring it with crayons and other designs to make it look appealing to the receiver. What is amazing form her design is that when someone opens the card the heart is also open.
There are about 30 people in the nursing homes and the items handcrafted by the kids would be given to these people. The cards are not individually addressed but the recipients would know they will come from the students of the Blessed Sacrament Religious Education.
