Dr. Pamela Pyle, gynecologist and obstetrician at Virginia Beach, said this project is really a wonderful tribute to their mothers since the scholarship will be helping children to pursue their dreams to become professional nurses in the future. It was learned that in 1970 Pamela’s mother, Alice Pyle met her new found friend Mary Meyer. They were then volunteer nurses who helped in outreach programs of the Virginia Beach Health Clinic.
Meyer died in 1994 of Lung cancer while she was then a nursing supervisor at a general hospital in Sentara. She died at the age of 60. The scholarship fund was established in her honor. Then two years later, Pamela’s mother, also died. Fortunately, with the approval and Meyer family blessing Alice Pyle was included in the foundation. In 1995, the foundation initially awarded scholarship grants to qualified students wanting to pursue nursing education. At the moment there are already 22 recipients who received a total amount scholarship of at least $39,000.
Scholar Kelly Shields who lives in Princess Anne is a manager of the recovery room in Virginia Beach General Hospital and is currently studying at Regent University with a course on organizational leadership and management.
She said she is blessed to have been awarded the foundation’s student financial aid – and she also believes this is a great help for her to be able to continue her studies in nursing. In 1995, Shields graduated from high school at Kempsville High School and since then worked at the hospital in Virginia. She said she really enjoy her current course in management as her nursing perspective has great influence as far as her approach to administration.
On the other hand, scholar Lauren Murphy is currently enrolled at James Madison University. She also received the $2,000 scholarship grant from the foundation.
During the awarding ceremony, her mother Lynn Murphy received the grant in behalf of her daughter who was having an important affair at her school. Her mother was also a former nurse at a hospital in Virginia. In fact, she took care of the late Mary Meyer while she was still treated with cancer.
