Living in a Nursing Home

A nursing home or skilled nursing facility (SNF) is actually a rest home, a type of care of residents. In other words, it is a place of residence where people requiring constant nursing care and having some significant deficiencies with every day activities could live. Typically, the nursing home population comprise elderly adults with physical disabilities. However, younger adults can also live in a skilled nursing facility to receive physical treatment.

Living in a nursing house is not easy to deal with. Most of the people have difficulty accepting the idea that they will have to move their close relatives into a nursing home. Before opting for a skilled nursing facility, sound them out about what they think:

  • · What kind of health care do they need?
  • · How often do they need services?
  • · What kind of equipment or supplies do they need? Do they need a wheelchair?
  • · Are they on a special diet?
  • · Etc.

After coming to a firm decision together and having selected a particular nursing home, see if you can help them to adjust to their ‘New Home’. Many nursing home residents often have difficulty adapting to their new envorenment, even if the nursing home is a perfect place to live. Make sure they are feeling supported and give them your word that you are going to visit them regularly. Here are some tips to help them be comfortable with their new home.

  • · Tell them to bring some of their special personal belongings. For instance, an old photograph could make them feel easily at home.
  • · Encourage them to take part in the activities offered at the nursing home. Tell them to make some new friends there and become part of a new community.
  • · Advise them to subscribe to a magazine or a newspaper to find new interests outside the nursing home.

Check with the staff of the nursing home whether your relatives are doing well. If you learn that they are having problems with the health care talk to the supervisor. If the problem is not resolved, ask to talk with the social worker or the Director of Nursing.
